Business Fashionable By Katherine Deutch When I started interviewing for graduate school programs last year, I struggled to find a balance between looking professional, and expressing my personal style. I wanted to wear something that radiated my personality in a crowd of other applicants, but kept finding that it was almost better to blend in. People invest in a properly fitted suit because it looks sophisticated, and it’s better to have the interviewer focus on what you’re saying than the new pair of funky earrings you purchased. This can differ based on where you’re interviewing, but as a general rule, it is wise to own a few professional pieces: a solid colored suit whether it’s a skirt suit or pants, a pair of flats or short heels you can actually walk in, and a bag that fits your portfolio. These items portray your adeptness at being organized, commitment to punctuality, and ability to function in a fast paced environment. AGL shoesCoach purse, Anne Klein watch I have found, however, that your fashion options expand greatly once you’ve been accepted into the professional world. Because wearing a suit every day is too formal for my work environment, I often wear the skirt and blazer as separate pieces. This helps me to appear professional, portray my personality through accessories, and tone down the distractions of patterns and bright colors.   White House Black Market jacket, Milly for DesigNation dress, J. Crew necklace While the particular dress by itself is better suited for a social event, the high neckline, knee length hem, and coloring compliment the blazer, making it a functional work outfit. The statement necklace emphasizes the black details, and highlights the silver present in the ballet flats above. I find that wearing bright colors and patterns allows me to connect with clients in an approachable way, rather than appearing overly formal or withdrawn.   Milly for DesigNation can be found at Kohls.com I can’t wait to pair this dress with sandals or wedges, for a more casual feel. The Milly collection is perfect for business or resort wear, and this dress never wrinkles. I always feel confident when I wear it!
